  1. Editor’s Choice: Polaris Vac-Sweep 360 Pressure Side Pool Cleaner

  3. Most Durable: Pentair LA01N Single Speed Booster Pump for Pressure-Side Pool Cleaner

My Favourite Side Pool Cleaners: Quick SUmmary

There is nothing better than Polaris Vac-sweep 360 pressure side pool cleaner. It requires no booster pump to operate! So right off the bat you save a few hundred bucks. It requires no pump because it uses a triple jet technology that provides enough power for deep cleaning.

You can use this cleaner on all in-ground pools of any size or shape. I really like how versatile and practical it is. You just grab this one package and it’s good to go!

Plus it’s very durable too. It sweeps, scrubs and vacuums your pool bottom and catches anything from sand to leaf. I can’t even think of anything it does not do!

This is an advanced and updated version of the Zodiac 280 model. So if you liked the older one, you are going to love this even more. It has three nozzles instead of two like the previous model.

What I enjoy about this cleaner is how it cleans the entire pool including the walls and stairs. So it will clean all the nooks and corners that other vacuums do not reach. So despite being quite expensive, it’s money well spent! Keep in mind that it does require a booster pump to function.

Even though it’s a booster pump I had to add it to the top three. When you’re going to buy a side pool cleaner, you are more likely going to buy a booster pump. And I don’t think you need to check out any other option but this one!

Why? Because it simply is the most universal booster pump out there. It’s made using durable and corrosion-resistant material that will serve you for years to come. It’s also compatible with legend premium, legend platinum truck series, and legend automatic pool cleaners!

The Polaris is actually an improved version of their 280 models. This means you get all the good features of the previous model with some great additions!

The key selling point of Polaris Vac-Sweep is how it requires no booster pump at all. Every time you use this side pool cleaner, the pool will be squeaky clean.

The way it does it without a booster pump is by using three jet nozzles! If you keep in mind how expensive booster pumps can be, this is a great deal for anyone.

As the Polaris Vac-Sweep 360 pressure-side pool cleaner has an all-wheel drive, it can easily scrub, sweep and vacuum even on the trickiest surfaces of your pool. It has triple jet power that makes this cleaner very energy efficient too.

The triple jet also makes cleaning faster and more powerful too. This is great for removing tricky dirt and debris that don’t want to be removed! It has a more comprehensive cleaning performance as well as the capability to climb walls and even steps!

This pressure cleaner comes with a single chamber filter bag that can catch large debris and heavy pebbles too. The debris is removed before it even reaches the filter. This not only saves a lot of time but also prolongs the life of the filtration system. So your filter does not wear off constantly.

The Polaris 360 has a belt drive mechanism. For comparison, other side pool cleaners usually have a shaft-driven mechanism. This means it has fewer parts so it lasts longer.

When it actually is damaged somehow, you will require less time and money to repair and maintain it. We need to think about these things as pool cleaners are a long time investment.

This all-in-one pressure pool cleaner comes with 31 feet of feed hose which helps you thoroughly clean any area you want. The in-line backup valve is great if you want to clean your pool without any interruptions.

This pool cleaner needs no additional booster pump to run. Polaris 360 connects to your existing pool circulation system. This means not only do you save money by not buying extra equipment, but the electricity bill also goes down. It’s excellent for energy efficiency!

Polaris Vac-Sweep 360 is another advanced and updated version of a previous Zodiac model called 280. So if you liked the older model, this one comes with some pretty great additions!

The older model was known for its fast and thorough cleaning abilities. This one is the same as it can clean the floor of your pool and even the walls.

The older 280 models used to leave some debris behind but this one doesn’t. That’s due to its three nozzles feature instead of two. So it can go deep into corners and steps better.

If you are looking for a pressure-side pool cleaner that can clean the bottom and the sidewalls of your pool, Polaris Vac-Sweep 380 is the best choice.  Another advantage of this pool cleaner is that it can fit into any shape of in-ground pools.

As it has a ziplock-style bag system, maintenance is super easy. The bag captures all the debris and prevents anything from leaking into the main chamber of the gadget.

So it gets a much longer life than older models. The belted drive mechanism of this cleaner also helps with easy and cheaper repair and maintenance.

The Polaris Vac-Sweep 380 pool cleaner has a belt-drive mechanism that makes cleaning very efficient. The wheels can rotate easily and clean from all sides. The belt is easily replaceable too.

This pool cleaner has a larger filter bag capacity than standard pool cleaners. This means you can catch big debris without having to constantly empty the filter bag. This saves a lot of time and energy.

Polaroid Vac-Sweep 380 cleaner comes with a 31-foot hose kit that allows you to clean the pool from corner to corner. Its in-line backup valve is great at maintaining the cleaning flow and causing no interruptions.

Polaris 380 pool cleaner uses a triple jet suction venturi design which is known to be one of the strongest in the market. Due to this, its suction power is great for thorough cleaning.

If your vacuum gets stuck in the corner of the pool what do you do? Nothing! Because this one comes with an Inline backup valve that automatically makes it back up every three minutes. So this feature actually prevents the Polaris 380 from bumping into anything! How convenient!

03. Pentair LA01N Single Speed Booster Pump for Pressure-Side Pool Cleaner: Best Booster Pump

Pentair LA01N Single Speed Booster Pump for...
  • Single speed universal booster pump
  • Made from durable, corrosion-proof materials, and provides 50-PSI at 12-GPM
  • Use with legend platinum, legend platinum truck series, and legend...

I know this is supposed to be all about side pool cleaners but I couldn’t help but add a booster pump to the list. And why not? Most side pool cleaners require a booster pump. And there isn’t any other option that’s better than Pentair LA01N!

Pentair LA01N is a very unique single-speed booster pump that is excellent for pressure-side pool cleaners. This booster pump can be called a universal model. That’s because you can use it with a lot of different pool cleaners.

It is compatible with the Legend Platinum, Legend Platinum Truck Series, and Legend automatic pool cleaner. It comes with all the right fittings and styles to fit with those pressure-cleaners perfectly. If you use any other model, all you have to do is purchase the right side sifting and that’s it!

If it’s not obvious yet, I really like this booster pump. And the reason is, it’s a power-pressure one, which is better at removing tough debris.

The ¾ HP motor is very convenient as it can deliver 50 PSI and 12 GPM. Even though LA01N is not a heavy-duty option, it has enough force to clean your standard pools in no time.

Durability is a key factor while purchasing a booster pump. You don’t want your booster pump to die before the pool cleaner. The pump should outlive the pressure-side cleaner.

This one does that as it’s made of full anti-corrosion material. So you can keep this for years without any weather damage.

The LA01N has been made to be used for a consistent period of time. So it does not overheat as easily as other booster pumps do. You can run your pool cleaner every single day for hours without any issue.

Talking of running it for hours, electricity cost is no joke. This one’s made to be very energy-efficient as it runs on 115V/230V.

This booster pump only draws 13/6//5 amps on full load. So you won’t get a heart attack by seeing your electricity bill!

Don’t worry, LA01N is not hard to install either. You only need a screwdriver and a wrench to properly set it in place. Plus, the motor is very well-made so it will probably last you for years to come.

If you are looking for an upgrade from your basic pool cleaner to something a little more advanced, Polaris Vac-Sweep 3900 Sport Pressure is a great option. This is an automatic pool cleaner that can be a game-changer if you use it right.

Don’t be fooled by the criticism online. For some reason, this cleaner gets a lot of shades even though most issues people face are user errors and the machine’s fault. I am here to dispel some rumors and misunderstandings!

This is basically a simple robot cleanse that does the job for you. You can maybe compare it to the Dolphin series by Maytronics but it’s very unique in its features.

Performance-wise, you can trust this side pool cleaner to maintain a consistent result with little to no disruptions. And it’s not a surprise as this is essentially a simple robot that is designed to do a repetitive task without missing a beat.

It works by using random navigation and tree Venturi-style jets to remove all sizes of debris from your pool. These jets are so powerful that they can filter 40 gallons of water per minute.

You do need a booster pump to use this pool cleaner. If you don’t have one, then you won’t be able to operate it. This is unfortunate as you will have to spend a few extra hundred bucks on it. But hey, it’s so worth it!

The awkward shape of this cleaner is something everybody notices before anything else! Yes, the shape is quite hard to store or fit in corners. But this shape helps to clean the corners of your pool very thoroughly. Most cleaners miss that area.

It’s honestly such a smart design and I wonder why other brands don’t do this often. They call it the TailSweep PRO technology.

The Snap-on feature is basically a scrubber/hose combo that provides high pressure that can reach any spot. The wheels on this pool cleaner are covered in Widetrax tires which provide superior traction. So it can easily scale ramps and walls.

This vacuum has a PostiTrain 3WD Movement System. Basically, this calendar can get around on three wheels and they are driven by the water pressure created by the booster pump.

The whole wheel system is made using stainless steel so it can withstand both corrosion and chain linking. It’s very durable and sturdy.

The 31 feet hose along with its 5-liter double-chamber bag is excellent for all sizes of dirt and debris. You can remove anything from algae to pebbles with Polaris Vac-Sweep 3900 pool cleaner.

Specifications:

  • Product Dimensions: 24 x 11 x 24 inches

05. Pentair Kreepy Krauly Racer Pressure-Side Inground Pool Cleaner: Classic Pick

Pentair 360228 Kreepy Krauly Racer...
  • Up To 30% Faster Cleaning Than Other Pressure-Side Cleaners For Maximum...
  • Front Rotating Brush Scrubs And Scours For A Deep And Detailed Clean
  • Large Intake Captures Debris Of All Sizes

This is such a classic and favorite pool cleaner by popular votes on the internet! That’s probably due to the simple design and promise it gives.

Pentair Kreepy Krauly Racer is an iconic pool cleaner that can scoop up an astonishing amount of debris in one go. It has an extra-wide intake throat which helps to collect even the biggest pebbles and rock. That’s it! It does exactly that with zero inconsistency.

Most average pool cleaners come with two to three jets. Pentair Kreepy Krauly has four venture jets that collect dirt inside the intake bag.  It can clean up to 30% faster than any other pressure-side cleaners. So you can assume how efficient it is due to the jet system.

If your pool is surrounded by trees or landscape, this is what you should be getting. Made specifically for pools surrounded by vegetation, this pool cleaner is very powerful.

The front brush can scrub and scour until you get a deep and detailed clean surface. So if your pool gets fungi a lot, this one will remove them all!

It does not collect the finest dirt particles from the water. This is a downside but this product is more focused on larger debris that clogs other pool cleaners.

Kreepy Krauly Racer comes with front rotating brushes that scrub your pool surface very carefully. It can also rotate in a reverse mood which enhances the cleaning process.

If you have an average-size pool, this is a very good option. It can clean your pool in less than two hours. It has ⅓ times more cleaning power for maximum debris removal. You can capture any size of debris including even the larger ones!

Kreepy Krauly Racer has superior traction than most cleaners due to its extra-wide tires. Overall, you won’t be disappointed with this.

The night LED lights are a very good touch that creates ambience if you’re cleaning your pool at night. The ultra-bright LED lights let you know exactly where it is in the pool. Overall, it’s a nice touch for nighttime pool activities.

If you love to use your pool with family and kids, Polaris Turbo Turtle pool cleaner is a very fun way to take care of your pool.

With its fun turtle design and bright green color, it looks like a tory in the pool. So if you are cleaning the pool while swimming, it does not feel distracting or annoying, which most cleaners feel like.

The Turbo Turtle guarantees to keep your pool garbage-free. It can reach all the tricky areas and target places. Whether your pool gets filled with pebbles, stones, leaves, or dirt, this one will remove them all.

The filter pack is a great feature of this Turbo Turtle cleaner as it requires minimal maintenance. It removes flotsam and junk from the pool and moves warm water all over the pool. This ensures that no mold or algae grow.

Overall I think this is a very easy and low maintenance way to add a cleaning system to your pool.

  • X-Trax tires provide extreme maneuverability and climbing performance, even...

The Zodiac MX8 is a great pool cleaner when you’re struggling to remove tough dirt and debris. By now you get that Zodiac knows what they are doing with their pool cleaners. This one is made with dual cyclonic technology that allows it to move faster than any other options on my list.

The thing is, if you have a larger pool, you need something that can get the job done faster and better. This one has a wider cleaning path than all the other Zodiac models.

It can capture larger debris with its maX-drive technology. This is a very new feature that uses maximum torque and extreme maneuverability. This provides a very aggressive scrubbing and all the tricky areas become very easy to clean!

It has Flex-Power turbines that provide an ultra-efficient cleaning experience every single time. To make sure not a single piece of debris gets out and ruins other parts of the machine, it has a sealed gearbox.

One of the things you will notice immediately after installing it is how heavy and sturdy the whole construction is. It feels and looks premium so you’re guaranteed to have a very durable pool partner!

I like the maX-Drive navigation feature of Zodiac MX8. It can use this advanced dual navigation system that can cover any size or shape of the pool. It has the best pool coverage with no hang-ups!

You only require 20 GPM of flow for this gadget to perform at it’s best. This makes MX8 the best option for solar pumps or two-speed or variable-speed pumps!

The MX8 comes with a convertible debris inlet. It’s great for larger debris consumption. So it can actually tackle anything from fallen leaves to fine sand and even small rocks.

The 39” Twist-Lock hose is great for reducing vacuum loss which can result in an overuse of fuel/energy. So this makes sure to have an energy-efficient operation on low flow pumps without compromising any power!

This pool cleaner can be used for all types of in-ground pools. You can use it on surfaces like concrete, tile, vinyl, and fiberglass. It’s very aggressive yet delicate on the surface. So you won’t see any scratches at all. Zodiac MX8  has the climbing ability so it can even clean in the tightest corners and vertical walls. Honestly, it’s a great investment for any type of pool.

Specifications:

08. WORX WG620.1 Hydroshot Cordless Portable Power Cleaner: Multipurpose Cleaner

WORX WG620.1 Hydroshot 20V Power Share 4.0Ah...
  • [PORTABLE POWER WASHER] The first truly portable power cleaner that lets...
  • [5X MORE PRESSURE THAN A HOSE] Delivers 320 psi of mean, green, cleaning...
  • [DRAW WATER FROM ANYWHERE] Attaches to a typical garden hose or draws water...

This is a bit different from the other options on the list. It’s not just a pool cleaner, per se, but can be used as one if needed. The best thing is, you can use this power cleaner to clean basically any outdoor space at your house.

This is a portable water cleaner that uses the water force to remove any stain, dirt, debris from surfaces. It’s lightweight and comfortable to hold. It uses fresh water from any source. You can even use a bucket. But as we are talking about pools, you have a massive water source to use!

It also comes with a 2-liter soda bottle that can be used to carry it around to clean any place you want. I picked this power cleaner because it’s handheld. So you have a lot more control over what you’re cleaning and how you are cleaning.

As much as the automatic cleaners are great, having something like this is great to clean in a hurry to clean very specific parts of your pool that other cleaners can not reach.

Don’t be fooled by its size. It’s a really powerful cleaner. It delivers 320 psi of mean, green cleaning streams while minimizing water usage at only .53 gallons per minute!

So it’s very efficient too as you don’t need any other fuel but water to operate it. Well, you do need a battery. It uses Worx PowerShare to operate both 20V and 40V tools!

It has multiple spray nozzles that allow you to switch between different levels of the water stream. Each varies in intensity. So you can switch based on what surface needs to be cleaned.

Buying Guide: Side Pool Cleaners

Types of Pool Cleaners:

  • Manual Cleaner: Manual cleaners come in many different shapes and styles. This type can vary from simple telescopic poles to a handheld vacuum. Whichever it is, someone has to use it manually. Hence the name.

Manual cleaners are good for small poles. If you have anything bigger than an average-sized pool, manual cleaners are going to be too much work.
  • Suction Side Cleaner: Suction pool cleaners are directly connected to the main filtration system of the pool so it only works when the pool is running. This is great as it’s a two-in-one system.

One downside is that suction side pool cleaners require more electricity than average due to it being connected to the main filtration line.
  • Pressure Side Cleaner: This is the type we are reviewing today. They use water pressure to remove all dirt and debris. We will discuss them in-depth in a later section.

Robotic clears are growing very popular due to their energy-efficient design. Some even come with spot cleaning brushes!

Best Pressure Side Pool Cleaners: What to Look for!

There are so many options in the market and all claim to be the best pressure-side pool cleaner for you. Logically that can’t be the case. They can’t all be amazing.

Even though we have shortlisted what we think to be the top 12, here are some of the key features you should look for in any side pool cleaner.

  • Cleaning Power: Make sure the pressure side cleaner you are purchasing can handle large to small debris including pebbles. Powerful pressure cleaners can handle it all. Polaris Vac-Sweep 360 Pressure Side Pool Cleaner for example has excellent cleaning abilities.

Basic cleaners just remove dirt and leaves which is not enough if you have quite a moderate size pool. So make sure it has high suction power.
  • Durability: Pool cleaners are an investment. They are quite expensive and require an added electricity charge too.

So you don’t want to spend hundreds of bucks on something that’s going to break after a few uses. Check the warranty system and the durability of the product before purchasing. Polaris Vac-Sweep 380 Pressure Side Pool Cleaner is the most durable option on the market.
  • Pool Type: What pool cleaner you will be able to use totally depends on the type of pool you have. So first you need to check whether you have an in-ground pool or an above-ground one. Then make sure the pressure side-pool cleaner you’re getting is made for that specific type.
  • Booster Pump: Side pool cleaners require a booster pump. Without a proper booster pump, you can not use these cleaners. Some cleaners come with their own ones while others require you to purchase one on your own.

Whichever it is, keep in mind that you will be needing to spend a few extra hundreds on an additional machine. Pentair LA01N Single Speed Booster Pump  is the most versatile and compatible choice for anyone. It can be used with a wide range of side pool cleaners.

How to Install and Use a Pressure Side Pool Cleaner

Certain pressure-side pool cleaners are tough to install bur for most parts, it’s a fairly straightforward process.

Here’s how to install your pressure-side pool cleaner:

  1. First, clean your pool filter very thoroughly.
  2. Turn on your pump and let the return line flush. After that, back off again.
  3. You need to install a wall fitting into the dedicated return line. If you have a return jet, do the same thing.
  4. Then it’s time to trim the leader hose. Most people don’t do this part which results in entanglement. The length of the hose should be the same as the deepest part of your pool
  5. Screw your leader hose into the wall fitting. Then attach it to the main feed hose.
  6. You need to extend the feed hose to the farthest pool edge. The line should not extend past the pool edge. If this happens, follow the manual and trim the hose.
  7. All feed hose floats should be evenly spaced. Then conned it to the pool cleaner.
  8. Then use the filter bag and secure it per the institution on the user manual.
  9.  If the pool cleaner requires a booster pump, turn it on at this point.

And that’s it, your pressure-side pool cleanse is ready to be used. Use it twice a week to always have a fresh and clean swimming pool.

How to Take Care of a Pressure Side Pool Cleaner

Just like everything in life, your pool cleaner needs regular care and maintenance. As it cleans your pool, you need to take some time to clean it. Regular care ensures that your pressure-side pool cleaner will perform at its best and last longer.

Here’s how to maintain a pressure-side pool cleaner:

  • Clean the filter bg regularly and never leave any debris on the bag for too long.
  • Remove the filter bag from the pool cleaner and empty it in a dumpster. Let it dry under direct sunlight for a few hours. When the bag is totally dry, all the stuck-on leaf and dirt will come out easily.
  • If your filter bag gets clogged up, use a hose to spray water on it. The water pressure will remove all the debris.
  • From time to time, remove the in-line filter and give it a gentle wash with water.
  • Always check the sweep hose for debris. Sometimes dirt and leaves can get stuck inside.
  • Always check the hose connection before starting the pool cleaner. Never over-tighten the snug hose connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you’ll find answers to questions we get asked the most about the best pressure side pool cleaners.

01. What is the Difference between a Suction and a Pressure Pool Cleaner?

Both suction and pressure pool cleaner are very popular for larger pools. But they function quite differently.

A suction pool cleaner gets connected to the main filtration pump of the pool to suck up all the debris and dirt. Then it is returned to the pump basket.

A pressure pool cleaner on the other hand uses water, specifically returning water from a separate booster pump to move the cleaner around the pool.

So for a pressure cleaner, you need a booster pump for sure. It comes with a debris bag where all the dirt gets collected.

Both are very good at what they do. It all depends on what would be the most suitable for your pool type.

02. How Do I Choose a Good Pool Cleaner?

There are a lot of pool cleaners available for people with various needs. Finding which one is right for you can feel a bit daunting. To find a good pool cleaner, you need to keep in mind certain things.

  • Your pool size
  • The type of debris your pool collects
  • The style of pool cleaner you like
  • How much maintenance you are ready to do
  • The budget

When you keep all of these things in mind and look for a pool cleaner that fits your pool size the best, cleans it well, and isn’t very tough to maintain.

Also, make sure that it’s not overly expensive. The price should depend on how frequently you use your pool.

03. Are Robotic Pool Cleaners Worth the Money?

Yes, they are. Getting grossly popular each day, robotic pool cleaners have their own appeal. They are super effective at cleaning various sizes of debris.

Robotic cleaners navigate around the pool water and remove unnecessary leaves, pebbles, and dirt. It’s very useful if you like a low maintenance option.

But keep in mind that these cleaners are super expensive and investment in themselves. They serve you for years and years so you will get your money’ worth.

04. How Long Should I Run My Polaris Pool Cleaner?

You should run your pool cleaner for at least one hour a day if you are regularly swimming in it. This keeps the water clean and fresh. If you are using the pool very frequently, this time can vary between 3 hours to 6 hours a day.

On average it takes 3.5 hours to properly clean a standard size pool. The rest depends on how dirty your pool is.

05. How Often Should I Backwash My Pool?

For the summer times, you should backwash your pool once a week as a basic rule of thumb. Backwashing means reversing the flow of water to the opposite direction than usual.

This helps to dislodge the dirt and debris trapped inside. For a pool that is used by many people on a regular basis, you might need to backwash twice a week to make sure nothing gets clogged or trapped.
